The Coming Cyberspace Cold War with Russia
There’s a very good reason Russia has not deployed its latest cyber weapons against Ukraine, argues Morgan Wright. They’re saving them for the United States in what could be the beginning of a modern cold war played out in cyberspace. NATO has declared cyber to be an operational domain and subject to the Article 5 mutual defense clause in the event of a “massive” cyber-attack. But what does “massive” mean? Wright predicts that Russia will continue to operate on the fringes in the gray areas of policy by conducting low-intensity warfare using tools and tactics refined against adversaries like Ukraine. What’s next? The potential for unrestricted warfare against our critical infrastructure, espionage operations targeting the software supply chain, and the deployment of new cyberweapons.
