Leadership in Times of Crisis: Marshall and the Atomic Bomb

  • Douglass Community Center 407 East Market Street Leesburg, VA, 20176 United States (map)

Marshall and the Atomic Bomb

In this program, filmmaker David Taylor will explore General Marshall's participation on the committee that examined the arguments for and against using the newly developed atomic bomb as a means of ending World War II. David will use film footage from his History Channel documentary “Up from Defeat,” which chronicles the previously classified work of a film crew sent into Hiroshima in the months following the atomic explosion in that city. Also featured will be David’s film “JFK: A presidency revealed,” which describes how John F. Kennedy came to believe nuclear Armageddon was inevitable. Concluding the presentation, David will show clips from his documentary “October Fury,” which shows just how close we came to that fate during a little known exchange with a Soviet submarine en route to Cuba in October 1962.
