Rationing, scrap drives, Rosie the Riveter, blackouts, race riots and strikes – all were part of life on the homefront during WWII. The nation was united, at the same time the war produced social upheaval and conflict at home. Letters, news stories, and artifacts illustrate the issues of the day as presented by Sandra O’Connell, co-author of An American Family in World War II. This award-winning book is based on a rare collection of nearly 700 letters written by a B-17 pilot, his teenage sisters and parents. Taken together, the correspondence provides an unusually detailed picture of one family’s experience in World War II and is a rare window into life on the homefront.
Sandra has presented programs for a number of aviation museums and WW II venues.
