The George C. Marshall International Center’s (GCMIC) Student
Partnership Exchange Program (SPEP®), now in its tenth year, is a
unique, reciprocal exchange program for high school students. The SPEP
is part of GCMIC’s Marshalling℠ Experience Programs. The original
program was created in 2006 as a key element of the sister county
partnership between Loudoun County, VA and Main-Taunus-Kreis, Germany
SPEP® was expanded in 2013 to include a reciprocal exchange program between GCMIC and two schools in Vienna, Austria, BG9 Wasagasse and Theresianum.
For two weeks in October, Austrian
students visit Northern Virginia to experience daily life in America.
They live with host families and participate in career exploration
experiences that focus on their individual professional interests. In
November, we send our U.S. students to Austria. Our students live with
host families, attend Austrian schools, visit cultural and heritage sites,
and participate in career exploration experiences based on their
